Duke of Edinburgh

Published: Tuesday, 06 September 2016 10:03

Duke Edimburgh1On the first day of spring, 11 keen students and 2 teachers headed out to the Wild West Coast to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Hillary Award Practice Tramp.
We began on the aptly named Hillary Trail, heading down the Omanawanui Track with native bush stretches merging onto rocky outcrops, steep valleys and soaring heights, granting us stunning views across to South head, the Waitakere ranges and the stretch of black sandy shore at Whatipu.
The students were in fine form, encouraging one another down the slippery and treacherous parts of the track, stopping from time to time to munch on chocolate-filled scroggin, and take pictures to record their travels.
We arrived at the historic Whatipu Lodge by nightfall and enjoyed home-made dinners (thanks students!), games of pool, puzzles and a great Kiwi quiz. The students bunked in the cosy homestead, sleeping deeply after a vigorous day outdoors.
The following day we trekked up the very muddy Kura track and summited Mt Donald Mclean to enjoy gorgeous views from the top, as we ate a well-earned lunch.
The final tramp for the Bronze award will be completed in December at the Pinnacles, Coromandel. We look forward to another adventure with the well-organised, adventure-loving students.

The Big Sing 2016

Published: Wednesday, 29 June 2016 09:26

choir websiteOur 57 member AGGS Choir made a ‘wonderful noise’ at the Big Sing on 15 June. The Big Sing is a three day event where over 3,000 students from schools throughout the Auckland region come together to sing, share fellowship with each other and compete in a number of categories. After a 16 year absence from the competition the AGGS Choir was back stronger than ever. In the competition section the girls sang a new arrangement of Ave Maria; the spiritual, Bring Me Little Water Sylvie, and the AGGS waiata He Wahine. We are delighted to report that at the end of the competition, the AGGS Choir was awarded Runner Up for their Performance in the NZ Category for He Wahine. The award is given to a choir that has not participated in the National Finale for the last two years.

Paddles of Glory

Untitled 1ON 13 March on the banks of the mighty Lake Pupuke, twenty six of AGGS ‘keenest’ met at sparrows pip in the interests of dominating the Auckland Dragon Boating regatta. A 7:30am meeting time meant that some girls were on the road well before 6am. It truly is a marathon undertaking and a big thank you to all the parents and staff who turned up to support the girls.
