Basketball Nationals 2011 - Palmerston North

Written by: Ora Keung

The AGGS Premier Basketball team qualified for the National Secondary Schools Tournament in Palmerston North for 2011 and set off on a 9 day long trip on Sunday 21st August. Our team went into the tournament in 3rd place from the Auckland Region with a mix of experience and fresh young players.

The first 3 days of the tournament was the pool-play section where we played 4 other schools with the two top teams qualifying for the quarterfinals. We won our first game against Mana College which helped set the team out on the right path. The next day however we lost both our games against Hamilton Girls' High and Napeir Girls' which were somewhat of a surprise and would usually make us ineligible for the quarterfinals but luckily the odds were in our favour and we were given a second chance. The next game against Rangiora was critical. To make it to the quarterfinals we had to beat Rangiora by more than 9 points, the pressure was on. At this point our co-captains Jackie Petelo and Insug Jung prepared us for our 'big game' by sharing some positive words of leadership to get us motivated. We held the lead throughout the entire match and ended up winning by 20 points: double what was needed. By winning our game against Rangiora we finished the pool section after 3 days 2nd in our pool which put us into the top 8 teams in New Zealand.

AGGS Senior A Netball Winners Again

AGGS SENIOR A Squad confidently beat MAGS SENIOR A Squad in the Auckland Secondary Schools Senior A Netball Finals.

Our Senior A Netball Team beat MAGS backed by a very vocal and supportive crowd. The first quarter was a bit of a wake-up call for our team as MAGS dominated the game going into the break up by 7 points. From there the crowd started arriving and our girls turned up the heat. By half time our supporters were joined by those Epsom Girls who had arrived early for their match against Mt Albert. The noise became deafening as MAGS were passed on the scoreboard and then started to fall behind. By the last quarter AGGS were in full control and with the shouting supporters and banging on the seating it was hard to hear the whistle at times. The win is the first major senior netball title in a number of years and bodes well for the future. SCORE was 27 - 20

This match concluded an almost unblemished season for this young and constantly evolving squad. Coaches: Maria Marama and Teressa Smith.
The talented netballers who pivoted and held their own through the strenuous four quarters were:

AGGS 1st XV Rugby Achievement

AGGS 1st XV Rugby Persevere to take the Title

Monday 4th July saw AGGS 1st XV Rugby Team take to the field against Tamaki College in this years' Auckland Girls 1st XV Rugby Union Final at Western Springs Stadium.

The afternoon was spent in deep preparations, team talks and trying to get an excited team focusing on the task ahead. Taking on Tamaki for the second year in a row was never going to be easy.

The pre-match line up started with a formidable challenge laid down by the AGGS Kahurangi Kapa Haka Group who raised the volume in the stadium to a level that was sustained throughout the match.

This years attempt to become the Champions was AGGS's third attempt to win a final in four years after losses to Manurewa in 2008 and Tamaki in 2010 and Tamaki in 2011. In the past few years the final hurdle has proven to be the girls downfall. Going into this year's final however it was AGGS who made the loudest noises from the word go. The team powered forward within the first 5 minutes through full back Va'anessa Molia-Fraser to get the girls off to a strong start. From that point on the lead swung from side to side. Tamaki returned the pressure when AGGS were ahead with AGGS chasing down each time Tamaki took control. Every error and dropped ball was taken advantage of keeping the crowd on tender hooks. Going into the half time break both teams were locked at 12-12 with both teams' supporters in full voice.

Geography Trip to Rotorua

croppercapture44On 13th June, 62 Year 13 students went to Rotorua for 2 days on a Geography trip. We started at the Rotorua Museum, where we learnt new things, took a billion photosm, and had heart attacks when we watched the re-enactment of the eruption of Mt Tarawera.

Our next stop was Hells Gate Geothermal Park, where guided tours helped us 'understand' more about the history of Rotorua. We also got to use mud straight from the ground to put on our faces.

That night we had a relaxing soak at the Polynesian Spa, where we could move from one pool to the next, as they all varied in temperature.
