In May’s AGGS Video Profile, meet new Deputy Principal Rebekah McLean, a passionate believer in the power of education who has just returned to New Zealand after 18 years teaching in London.
Rebekah was the first person in her family to attend university and earn a degree, and because of this is living proof of the opportunities that arise through education. It is a conviction that now sits at the heart of her work.
In this month’s profile, Rebekah explains why Auckland Girls’ Grammar School is the perfect fit for her passion for raising achievement for all students. In particular, her focus as an educator is looking at where marginal gains can be made for particular target groups, to ensure that every student has the best chance of success.
Rebekah, who has a six year old daughter and two year old son, returned to New Zealand so her whānau could experience a Kiwi childhood. Her family is loving being settled in Auckland, and she is personally loving working at AGGS, a school she says strongly resonates with her education ethos.
Says McLean: “I found the first day that I walked in the staff were so welcoming. It was the first thing that I realised, no wonder people stay here, because it is such a happy place to work. And then when the kids came into the school it just solidified that I had made the right choice because they are exceptional. They are just such wonderful young women. Everything about them is impressive to me.”
Rebekah joins fellow Deputy Principals Gavin Morgan and Helen Long, with Associate Principal Maree Flannery and Principal Ngaire Ashmore heading up the AGGS Senior Leadership Team.
