Matariki 2025 was a truly unforgettable event at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, marked by a powerful, full-school haka performed on our historic grounds.
In the month leading up to the celebration, our incredible Year 11-13 Ngā Tūmanaka o Kahurangi students took the lead, visiting tutor classes across the school to teach the Haka Pōwhiri. This student-led initiative was a huge success, culminating in a spectacular display of unity.
Imagine nearly 1200 students and staff standing together on the front lawn, beneath the Matariki flag and in front of our magnificent main building. The atmosphere was spine-tingling as we shared karakia (prayers) in both Māori and English, honouring each of the Matariki stars. We sang waiata, and the ceremony culminated in a powerful haka tautoko, performed as one by the entire school community.
Deputy Principal Maree Flannery shared her thoughts on the special occasion: “It has been special as a school to show our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and through this shared experience to strengthen our sense of unity, honour te ao Māori, and learn more about working together in partnership as Tangata Whenua, Tangata Tiriti and Tangata Moana.”
This Matariki celebration truly showcased our school’s commitment to cultural understanding and unity.
