YEAR 10 STUDENTS DO THE MAHI AND BRING HOME THE TROPHY

On Wednesday 28^th October, 16 Year 10 AGGS students attended the Engineering Young Māori Minds Day. The focus of this event was for Māori students to explore and experience a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) learning environment that is fun, safe and immersed in tikanga Māori and whakawhanaungatanga. The girls worked in teams to complete STEM challenges such as building a catapult, designing and building a robotic insect and a waka that could travel on both land and water. They were competing against Māori students from other schools but AGGS was the only all girls school attending. The challenges weren’t easy, requiring problem solving, creativity, perseverance and lots of cooperation and teamwork.

The girls loved every part of the day, especially the prizegiving at the end, where AGGS was presented with the first place trophy. Tino pai rawa atu!

Year 13 Media Studies Documentary

Alena Jefferson and Zenobia Tikoisuva created this documentary film as part of their Year 13 Media Studies class.

This work is worth valuable credits towards NCEA Level 3, while also providing an opportunity to create a piece of art that they can share with the class, whanau and the wider school community. This film is a look at the Niuean cultural tradition, Hifiulu. In normal circumstances, this event would have been a mass gathering of family and friends coming together to celebrate Alena's brother, Malachi Jefferson, and his traditional haircutting ceremony. Given the disruption of Covid-19, the family had to be creative and flexible in order to maintain this valued cultural tradition, while also meeting the health and safety requirements of living during a global pandemic.

The AGGS Student Council

Our Student Council is made up of two representatives from each year group, who are chosen by their peers.   Recently the Student Council has been working on the Vision Statement for our new Strategic Plan.
